Helicopter - Bloc Party (Sharoze's Analysis)

This music video has constructed a a very gritty feel for itself through their use of camerawork, mise-en-scene and editing.

The camerawork consists of many quick shots throughout and a variety of different angles and shots. It begins with an establishing shot of a worn out hut, straight away setting the gritty tone for the rest of the video. After that there is a combination of close-ups middle shots and high angle shots of the band. All of these cause the audience to feel disoriented, this is then combined with zooms and jump cuts to increase of the pace of the song to coincide with song and once again make the whole video look a bit uneasy. During this you see the band playing which follows one of Goodwin's theories of the visuals following the audio.

The mise-en-scene of the video is constructed very well, they use a small worn out hut, something relating to a horror film to create that gritty feel for the music video. Also if you look at the location in whih the band members perform they are really ordinary, everyday places, once again giving that gritty feel to the video but also making the band look very grounded. Their is constant harsh lighting throughout the video, this gives the gritty feel look like a comic book etc making the video look very unique. It also makes it look as if you are watching it from a very old televison.

Finally there is a lot of editing in the video. The fact that the whole video is in black and white makes it look very low budget which seems like the theme they are trying to create, alongside the location etc. They also blur the screen, use fast edits and jump cuts to give it a budget, gritty look. What this does is that the audience feels like the band is about the music and not the special effects and allows the audience to concentrate on the music, rather than doing a flash video, with special effects which would distract the audience. This also shows the audience that this song and video are/could be about a very serious topic. This is something that we would like to apply to our video by trying to give it a very dark feel by possibly making the black and white.
